Earthquake by Ruskin Bond is an illustrated book about an earthquake in Shillong published by Puffin Books. Earthquake is a such a lovely story! Somewhat disturbing material for young children, at least that’s what I was thinking while reading it, but at the end of it, a story of resilience and fortitude, and looking up when things are down. Ruskin Bond’s writing is sublime.
A word about the illustrations: They’re not as good as Ranji: The Music Maker’s, one of the main reasons I was motivated to buy this book. Mr. Sayan Mukherjee, you are Fantastic, but you can do Better. The previous one was *painted*, at least that’s what it seems like to *me*, while this one was more “pencill-y”, it had a hint of Mario Miranda about it. Hm. Two styles from the same artist – not something you see every day. I wonder why?
Anyway. I’d still definitely recommend the book, just that if you have small children, they might need Grandma or Grandfather to cuddle them while they finish reading it (it’s not very big).
